An Easy to Read and In Depth Description of The Electoral College Can be Found at How Stuff Works

In brief, presidents are elected by an electoral college and not by the national popular vote in the November election. The nominees to the Electoral College from each state are selected during the summer (usually at their party's conventions). In Alaska (actually, all states except Maine and Nebraska), electors are selected based on which party's presidential and vice presidential nominees win the popular vote in that state. Another good reason to vote!!

During history there were four times that the popular vote nationwide was different than the popular vote in each state.... and therefore, the electoral vote was different. There must be at least 270 electoral votes for a nominated slate (president and vice-president) to take office. One time no one got 270 votes and the US House of Representatives elected the president!!

So let's think this through backwards!

  • The Presidential slate is voted on by the electoral college.
  • The college is selected by the state based on which party gets the most popular vote.
  • The party selects it's electors during the summer (usually at the state convention)
  • The state convention is attended by...the issues and platforms are determined by...the delegates
  • The delegates are selected at the caucus.
  • The caucus is free to all voters who are registed in that party.
